The body shape calculator allows you to determine your body shape. All you need to know is the measurements of your shoulder, your waist and your hips.

All you need for the body shape calculator is some measuring tape!

The actual body shape calculator can be found in the box below. Please enter the values either in cm or inches. The unit of measure does not matter however please provide all values in the same unit to make sure the results are accurate.

In case you want to read some hints on how to measure yourself please refer to the chapter below the calculator. You can measure your shape alone but of course it is easier (and more fun!) to do this with a friend.

Once you have your result you can see style tips for your body shape. The tips range from a brief overview of the dos and dont’s to our overview of wardrobe essentials for the different types.

As a final note before you start: The body shape calculator is just what the name implies – a calculator. You will get a result based on the rules put in the calculator. Not all bodies can be squeezed in a defined shape so please take the result as a suggestion. Which of those types are you? The body shape calculator is just 3 measures away.

For the above body shape calculator to work you need to measure:

  • The largest diameter on your shoulder level.
  • The widest point of your hips.
  • Finally the smallest part of your waist.

For this you just need a measuring tape and something to record the numbers. For detailed instructions please see the hints below (please click on the plus sign to see details):

Measuring your shoulder width without help from another person is very difficult. The easiest way is to get support from a friend while you stay in front of her / him. Your friend should wrap the measuring tape around the shoulder on the highest possible point.

The tape should almost slide over the top of your shoulders! This should be the widest part of your shoulders. Do no measure straight across the shoulders, instead encircle them with the tape measure. Please note down the circumference and put it into the corresponding body shape calculator field above.

The measuring tape should be applied firm but not to the extend of cutting into your skin.

For this you either need a friend again or you determine the slimmest part of your lower body in a mirror. wrap the measuring tape around this part while breathing and standing naturally.

As mentioned for the shoulders, please make sure to not wrap the measuring tape too tight. It should not sink into your skin as this could lead to inaccurate results.

As with the other two measurments either rely on another person or look into a mirror. The hip should be measured at the widest point of your hip bones and buttocks. Wrap the tape around you in a straight line and take note of the width.

As with the waist please make sure that the measuring band just lies flat on the skin without applying any force.

The body shape calculator gave me a result. Now what?

First of all remember that there is no “right” body type. Every body type has beautiful features that can be further accentuated with the right clothing style.

As mentioned in the beginning it is also hard to categorize every body shape in one of the 5 predefined types we use. If your shoulders are a bit wider than your hips then you are an inverted triangle. But maybe you also have a fabulous waist which means you can wear hourglass clothes as well? In case you are not sure about the answer you can discuss is in the comments below.

Regardless of the result, now that you have calculated your body shape it will make shopping easier in the future. Some types of clothes are simply not ideal for a certain body type so you should try to avoid them.

    Why is the full bust measurement not included? This should be instead of the shoulder measurement. Also, it is not clear whether you measure straight across the shoulders or encircle them with the tape measure.

    Not only that, but your examples of inverted triangle shapes (what led me here in the first place) are false. Charlize Theron, Renee Zellwegger, Naomi Campbell, Jessica Alba and Demi Moore. They are in fact all tube (ladder, ruler, banana, etc) shaped. Please adjust your “study” of body shapes. Thanks.

      Hello Heather,
      thanks for your feedback! About celebrities: you will in fact find different opinions about what body shape these women are. Some say Angelina Jolie is an apple shaped women, some say she is an inverted triangle. AS long as nobody measures her in person, that will always stay a mistery…
      We did replace three of the women in our article though after your feedback as there are more “obvious” examples for inverted triangles.

      The bust measurement is not included, as we believe body shapes in general stay the same (and only change with hormones). You can change your bust measurement with plastic surgery though.

      We used your feedback to make the measurement on the shoulders a little clearer. Thanks!

    Um, im 14and im just wondering, am i a pear shape? I am a size 36c, i have no stomach or waist and my hips are not big, but my butt is rounded and decent.

      Hey there,

      thanks for sharing this with us. Can you give us the other measurements? It is hard to figure out your body type with just the size…
      In case you do not have a defined waist this could mean you are a rectangle but you also might want to wait a bit as your body might decide for a growth spurt in the next years.

So I’m really confused what shape I am tbh , I’m 15 years Old and my measurements are : shoulders 42 waist 29 hips 42 , and that’s kinda confusing me because idk if I’m pear my mom and evreyone tells me hourglass but I think I’m rectangular thingy , so can you help me to figure it out ! Btw I’m kinda tall I’m 5’9 thank you !!

          Hello Mariam,

          with 42/29/42 you are a definite hourglass. To be a pear your hips have to be quite a bit larger than your shoulders which is not the case for you. The rectangle body type for you would start with a waistline of 32 or more. Let us know if you have anymore questions!

      Hey there,

      Based on your measurements you are an hourglass. Your waist is very slim, less than 75% of your hips / shoulders. If you show of your waist with slim, tailor made clothes I think you will look just fab!

      Hello Kathryn,

      you are an hourglass as your waist is less than 3/4 of your shoulders / hips. This is not set in stone however as technically with a waist of 29 you would be a rectangle. Nevertheless you have a curvy body so you should make sure to accentuate this with figure hugging clothes or at least a defined waistline.

      Hello Tiffany,

      thanks for sharing. Based on your measurements you are a curvy pear – your hips are (slightly) wider than your shoulder. As your waist is very slim compared to your shoulders and hips you are also an hourglass. I think you cannot go wrong with the tips in the hourglass section as your hips are only a tiny bit wider so that should not be a factor in most outfits!

    Hi I’ve really been struggling to figure out my body shape and was wondering if you could help. Every calculator i use gives me different results. I’m 16 and 1.46m (about 4ft 9). I wear a 32C and weigh about 42kg (92lbs). My bust-waist-hips are 84-66.5-87 cm (33-26-34). My shoulders are 87cm (34inches) around. Could you help me figure out my body shape please? Thanks!

      Hello Allison,

      thanks for sharing. You are still considered a rectangle however you are pretty close to the hourglass category. You can basically wear clothes from both types, just make sure you do not hide your waist and on the other hand do not ever emphasize your shoulders / hips to avoid looking unbalanced.

    Very odd… I got a rectangle. However, I don’t look much like a rectangle. I am a young(er) teenager, slender but some curves.

    Shoulder: NA (don’t know how to measure, directions rather unclear)
    Bust: 33
    Waist: 26
    Hips: 34

    From what I understand, my ratio percentages are shoulder-waist .78%, and my waist-hip .76%.

      you got it… the border between rectangle and hourglass in this calculator is 0,75 so this is why you got the rectangle result.

    Shoulders: 37
    Bust: 34
    Waist: 29,5

      Hello Maggie,

      Your ratio of shoulder / hips to your waist makes you a rectangle, at least for “our” calculator. Your hips are indeed the widest point of your body but only marginally so. Bottom line you can wear pear or rectangle clothes. For the latter you should avoid anything that adds extra volume to your hips alone…

      Hello Cadi,

      You are indeed close to a lot of body shapes. Your ratio of waist to shoulder is 0,75 which is the borderline between rectangle and hourglass. Your hips are also the widest point of your body which makes you a pear.

      I think you are very lucky as you can just wear whatever you feel best in, no matter if it is for an hourglass or a pear. Maybe even some rectangle clothes if you do not hide your waistline too much!

    I’m confused about my body shape,

    My shoulders width is slighty wider: 42cm
    while my waist width is: 28cm
    And my hips width is 40cm.

    According to the body shape calculator I’m inverted triange but I have thick thighs and a full round bottom.

      Thanks for sharing your picture – that makes it easier! The calculator gave you inverted triangle as the shoulders are the widest part of your body. Of course you also have a very curvy form which can be seen clearly in thew picture. With your measurements you also qualify as an hourglass so you can wear clothes from this type as well.

    I’m confused too with my measurements. Some webs said I’m pear and some said hourglass.
    I’m 19 yo and my measurements are 35, 27, 36.
    According to the calculator I’m rectangular but I think I have waist line, and thick thighs too.

      how are your shoulders? Rounded or rather straight?
      That often helps to figure out if you are a rectangle (rather straight shoulders) or hourglass (rounded and sloping shoulders).

      You can also try some shirts without a waistline (which look great on rectangles) and then a very fitted shirt (which look great hourglass and pear shaped bodies – and sometimes on rectangles). Take pictures.
      Try a drop waist dress (which only looks great on rectangles) and one fitted at the natural waistline (which looks great hourglass and pear shaped bodies – and rectangles). Take pictures.
      Which style do you like best? A rather fitted one (hourglass or pear) or the one that has no waistline or a dropped waist (rectangle)?
      If you then still cannot decide on hourglass or pear, try some tips for pears (darker bottoms, etc.) and then try on a typical outfit for an hourglass.
      Which one do you think looks better on you?

    Thanks for you calculator. For me the shoulders are a key measurement42.otherwise in most calculators I come out as a rectangle or hourglass (on a non-bloat day)even though I have curves front and back. Bust 38 waist 32 or 33 and hips 37 or 38. Thanks again
